From my research online I could tell that PRS guitars is one of the companies that pays a great deal of attention to the drying process. When he speaks on his video blog Paul talks about drying the wood to the point when the resins crystallize, and than re-hydrating it to 40-45%. I was planning on making a small DIY kiln (or hot box) where I can store my wood (the type that resembles a closet or a cabinet, well insulated and has a light bulb as a heat source). My question is how can I tell if the resins have crystallized or not? what would be a time-frame for me to be sure? Gorjan |

viewtopic.php?f=10101&t=35707 viewtopic.php?f=10101&t=22709 The object is not to dry the wood by this process, but to take already dried seasoned stable wood and further process by baking at 200 - 212°F to drive the moisture content down to zero (which crystallizes the resins), then re-acclimatise back to 8% moisture content. The first link tells you all you need to know (and more) about why. The second link is to JJ Donohue's shop built cooker. |

I built a small locker in my workshop with a floodlight as a heat source. The temperature in the closet gets up to about 175° with 0% moisture! Then I bring the wood out and acclimate the wood to 8%. I've done this with many other projects besides guitar making! Be sure to acclimate your wood back to 8% because it will swell up! Not good! ![]() |

A friend from Spain came by my workshop and I show him how to make one, and he went home and he DID it! Microwave dry the wood from inside out. |
